I got an email with my passport application locator number, what is it for? How and where do I use it?

You must have applied for your passport through a commercial passport agent. To check your application status on the U.S. government web page you don’t need such a number!

   It is a reference number so that you can check on the application to see when it will be processed.

   Any queries you have re your passport, use that number in any communication. Doing so will enable them to ascertain at what stage the application is at.
